81I have some difficulties remembering the last time I read a book from top to bottom without interruptions. This book was written by one of the former Portuguese judicial police inspectors (Gonçalo Amaral) responsible for the investigation of Madeleine McCann´s missing which happened more than two years ago (03 May 2007) while she was enjoying vacations with her parents in Algarve, Portugal.
Frankly I must admit that after knowing that the group of parents use to dinner in a restaurant leaving all their kids alone sleeping in their apartments, I felt something was wrong with the investigations when no one suspected of any other scenario but the kidnapping.
If one try to put himself in all those parents` position it is easy to realize that if some accident had occurred during the time they were at the restaurant they all would immediately feel guilty of what happened and, I believe, it is possible to conceive they could all try to minimize the damage doing everything to make it look like a kidnapping. Of course this is all hypotheses and does not prove anything by it self.

This book was written by someone who knew every detail from the investigation and even though he was taken from that same investigation, and perhaps be guilty of some of the mistakes that took place during the probe (not the only guilty though), I do not believe he would bring to the "outside" facts that were not already in the investigation process. So it is interesting to know some of the facts that were determined during investigations which were never brought to "day light".
It is important to remember that those facts still does not show us exactly what happened to Maddie that night. But one thing is for sure: they do show us what did not happened...
There are several occurrences which happened both on that distressing day as well as on the following weeks that show how the kidnapping assumption does not make much sense:

The kidnapping theory was defended by Maddie´s parents from the beginning.

Among the group (in which the McCann´s family was part of) only Maddie´s parents declare having observed the open window on the children´s bedroom. The majority could not testify it because they only went to the apartment after the alert was made. The only finger prints found on that open window belong to Kate McCann´s left hand.

The only testimony made by someone outside the group which refer the open window was made by Amy, one of the educators from the Ocean Club (the place where they were accommodated), who pointed the observation between 22h20m and 22h30m. So, long after the time the alert was made and does not prove that the window was open at the time the "crime" took place. It is also strange that after noticing her missing child a mother would have left her other young children alone in the same room (still with the window opened) from where the alleged kidnapper had taken Maddie.

The set of testimonials and testimonies show many inaccuracies, incongruities and contradictions. In some cases this could be seen as false testimonies. In particular the key testimonial to the kidnapping theory from Jane Tanner which was successively altered, losing all its credibility and becoming ambiguous and disqualifying itself.
Sniffer Dogs detect scents
A video showing Eddie and Keela (two forensic dogs) and their handler ex PC Martin Grime at work in Portugal on the case of Madeleine McCann.
The dogs clearly alert to the scent of cadaver and blood on clothing in the hired Renault Scenic and in Apartment 5A where Drs Gerry and Kate McCann stayed with their family in Praia da Luz in May 2007.
- There is a unlocated dead body which was substantiated by the English dogs (EVRD - Enhanced Victim Recovery Dog; CSI – Crime Scene Investigation = dog that search and locate human blood even in very small amounts) and corroborated by the preliminary lab results.
- These evidences were found behind the seating room´s couch, beside the closet on the parents` bedroom, on a piece of clothing from Maddie, on the teddy bear (which was seen by all being carried by Maddie's little sister on the following days after the disappearance), on two pieces of clothing from Kate, on the car key and in the luggage compartment of the car that the parents rented several days after the disappearance.

There are people saying that this book has the intention to accuse Maddie´s parents of her dead but after reading it carefully I think that`s not true.
There is not a single word in this book stating that they have killed her. But it is also true that this does not mean they do not know what happened that day and tried to hide it...

About 4 months after the disappearance, the investigation took a new direction after Mark Harrison (Highly respected National Search Adviser NPIA (National Police Improvement Agency) for Missing persons Searches, Homicides and Big scale Natural disasters in the United Kingdom) arrived to Algarve and start working with the Portuguese police, Leicester police and the Scotland Yard members present in the field.

It`s not easy to really know what happened to Madeleine McCann that day but it`s easy to see that there was lot of negligence in the way those parents look over their children, at least during those vacations.
I`m not saying they deserved what happened or even that they are guilty of Maddie´s dead. Even though I believe they love their daughter, I am not so sure they don`t know what happened and managed to hide it very well.

I have got this English summary of the book from one of the links you gave us http://www.mccannfiles.com/id137.html and it´s amazing to see how so many things were manipulated during the investigation. From what I have read so far it´s difficult to believe in the possibility of little Maddie is still alive and that´s the saddest thing. Lets hope the truth about what happened to Maddie sooner or later will be known.

Dear G-Ma, it´s really sad to think that almost every homicides of under 5 years old children are committed by close related people. Unfortunately the surgery has been delayed by my surgeon due to his vacations so I´ll have to wait a little longer. Thank you so much for your comment :)

As you know Funride,I have been following this story since day one, I am not sure that we will ever find out the whole story or if little Maddie will ever be found, but i pray that she will be reunited with her parents alive and well.
This case touched at the heart of millions of people all over the world and there is not a single day that goes past that I don't think about this little girl.
I hope that we get to know the whole story someday because when the truth is revealed we may learn about ways to prevent this happening ever again.

We'll probably never know the truth about what happened to this poor child, no matter how many investigations are done. Eye-witnesses are notoriously un-reliable and the facts have clearly been muddied in a variety of ways by the investigation. It is all so sad. That said, I hope this book will be published in English as it would be very interesting to get the Portuguese rather than the English POV on this case. Excellent hub with good info!
Hi Hope, thanks . You´re right about it and it was not only on that night, it happened in the nights before. I also don´t understand how people travel abroad with their kids and then leave them all day with nannies without spending any time with them.

Thank you Jimmy, before putting this hub together I´ve read your hubs again and I also would love to "see" Maddie alive and well. But there are many more facts that I didn´t include on this hub regarding to the investigations which make me believe that something happened to Maddie and she was hiden somewhere (Ex: A Scottish family - Smiths - who saw a man carrying a little child on his arms exactly in the opposite direction of which the lady from McCann´s group said it was going and later they even recognized this man as being Jerry McCann).
It´s also important to remember that millions were donated to this cause and if the parents really had something to hide then they´re also guilty of fraud and swindling. And remember that they got the best lawyers before they were even made suspects...
I truly rather believe she is alive and well but unfortunately all the evidences prove the contrary :(
Hi Robie, unfortunately you´re right and the truth can only be found if they eventualy discover little Maddie. I really hope that publishers will edit an English version of this book and the sooner the better.
Being a mother of 2 young girls, I can't even begin to think about possibly leaving them alone, whether they were sleeping or not. It is just not in my motherly instincts to do...I guess I just don't understand it....I can't imagine the thought of either of them waking up and not knowing where their mother is....Just that alone should do it for the mother! I hope one day we do learn the truth...My heart was just ripped open when I heard this news for the first time.

There was an witness that claims she heard Maddie crying for hours on the night before the disappearance. I remember watching an interview made to her parents where the mother talked about that episode and showed some regrets of not being there to comfort her daughter when she was crying, but nevertheless she left them alone again on the next day :/

Shyamal - I suppose until the moment the body is found nobody (except perhaps the parents) knows for sure what has happened that day. I hope it was an accident like a fall from the back of the couch where the dogs also gave the alarm for dead body smell. The hypothesis of intoxication with sedatives it´s also a possibility.
Very informative hub funride. The problem that always bothered me was they left their young child ALONE to go have dinner. If they had wanted time away from the kids they should have paid for a babysitter and went on the trip by themselves. I cannot say whether they are innocent or guilty, but Maddie and her sister were way too young to be alone.

You´re absolutely right, they should have left their children at home with their grandparents or with a babysitter instead of taking them along and putting them all day long with babysitters and then leaving them alone to be able to eat and drink wine with their friends. I want to believe they´re innocent of their daughter´s dead but I´m almost sure they´re guilty of hidden her body and pretend they know nothing with the help from their spokespersons and all the media.
I believe there was only 3 victims in these case: Maddie, her brother and her sister.

Hi Epifanny, thanks for your comment. After reading the book I felt the need to share some of the information and I guess it worked like a way to relief my sorrow and even my anger about all this. I´m glad it also helped you becoming more informed.
This was one of the more pathetic episodes in recent times. No-one came out of it well. The press for not withholding judgment and rushing to defend or condemn, the police for secrecy and a hot/cold approach, the parents for turning it into a media circus - brand McCann. The general public for being swayed by the media into mindless 'belief' for or against. The only innocents were the children in that room, who have all been damaged, though only one was lost.
That´s right Paraglider, no one came out of it well and there are things about this case that will never be fixed. Lets` hope everybody can learn from this and be able to avoid similar future situations.
I so much hope that Madeleine will some day be found alive and well, but I suspect that even if she is, she will be a very different little girl than the one who was 'lost' on that fateful evening.
Personally I have never for one moment suspected the parents of foul play, although I agree with Epifanny and SweetiePie that children that young should not have been left alone. Perhaps we will never know the whole truth. My gut instinct tells me that she's still alive, although this flies in the face of logic. After all, little girls don't generally survive long in these cases. I pray that she was truly snatched by someone who wanted a child to love and cherish rather than for any other reason.

But frankly I think we all should be heedful for every other children out there and always try to prevent situations like this.
Great Perspective from Portugal Funride. All we hear is distorted stories outside, we don't know who to believe. Now they are giving new scenarios which is even more bizarre. I think the mother knows it. Only god knows the truth. I would love to read the English version some time, but your summations was great.

I am astonished as to how many people think the McCanns are the only people in the world to have left their children in a holiday apartment on their own.
Whilst I was on holiday 2 weeks ago, a young girl came down to the entertainment area crying her eyes out saying that she had woken up in her apartment and her mummy and daddy weren't there. The girl was about 7 and thankfully had the common sense to find someone who could help. Once the annoucement was made it took around 15 minutes for the mother to appear.
It was terrible to witness the little girl so upset and confused and you'd think that especially post Madeleine, her parents would have known better. This was not the case and leads me to believe that there are probably many other parents out there STILL doing the same thing as the McCanns did.
I do not in anyway condone this but it is fact that people have always done it and are still doing it.

For those who still think that leaving their kids alone and unattended it´s OK I would like to remember that accidents happen all the time (much more often than abductions).
I also understand there are cultural habits which "try" to make this OK, but let me tell you that it is not OK. Otherwise we (humans) were no different than any other wild animal with the slight difference that there are wild animals that almost never leave their offspring unattended. Once again there is only one victim in all this - children!
im from portugal and there's a general impression among the people here that the parents are not innocent in this. Too many loose ends and a high profile cover-up just makes us more suspicious...

Excellent research. Where there is smoke, there is also fire. Seems like this investigation may go the way of the Jon Benet Ramsay case here in the States. Their CSI team needs to comb through the evidence again.

I never believed the Mccanns were guilty of more than neglecting their children while they went out to eat, but do you know what in the last 6 months I have changed my opinion. I now think that it must have been an accident due to neglect and a cover up, I have 2 little boys my oldest is just 2 weeks older than Madeleine, I would never dream of leaving them alone and if anything happened to either of them I could not function, let alone go running and face the media. I believed they were being strong at the time but as time goes on I now think that that the pain Kate Mccann showed was the pain of a woman who knew that her child was not coming back and that she has to put on a show if she was going to be allowed to keep her other 2 children.

After all this time and having less media "noise" around us it´s easier to think and understand which are the most probable scenarios that can explain what really happened. If you ask me my only doubts are about who helped Kate and Jerry besides their friends because I´m sure they had precious help from others to conceal the child body until now (and unfortunately I must suspect of someone from the church).

Unfortunately the police files do not back up a lot of the most contentious stuff which Amaral claims. He was taken off the case for damn good reasons in my opinion - and the book is an attempt to salvage his reputation. His 'theories' about what happened that night don't even fit the evidence, fgs. It takes two hours for cadaver scent to develop and by his reckoning it had about 15 minutes.
And there were nine people in the Smith party - only Mr Smith and his wife thought, 5 months later, that it could have been Gerry, and the others disagreed. He was sat in the Tapas bar anyway.
Amaral is a chump - now he is getting himslef involved with some unsavoury 'journalists' and posting on anti-Mccann websites. Not a good move.
Hi TotalBull, I respect your opinion and perhaps you´re right about that last paragraph but that doesn´t make the evidences less evident and true. If you ask me, it´s much harder to believe in "his theories" than conceive the idea that little Maddie was abducted but that does not make it less probable to be the true (sad true).

Hello Brenda, I understand how you feel and I believe they must have learned something with all this and really hope they are now much more caring of the little twins (even though this doesn`t make them innocents).
What really amazes me is the fact that nobody talk about this in the beginning, because if those two parents were not doctors they would have been "massacred" since the first day and they would probably had lost their other two children to the justice right away.
A great read about an incident tha left me feeling very uncomfortable - not 'just' because a child was missing, but because of how it was being presented to us. It was all too slick .........
You were not the only one... the sad thing is that after all this time nothing has been done to clarify what really happened...
I have still hope that someday we will all know for sure what happened to little Maddie.
As just another person (and wife) who belives that th McCanns have pulled off the avoidance of a serious crime, that of child neglect, we cannot understand why they still have not been cahrgd bwith this crime yet, but been allowed to make money out ofthe event. As someone who has raised four children and even at ages 12 would not go out and leave this case has progressed and they have got away with a crime. The world is going mad. We area waiting for hre book in English, but if I was a very wealthy man, I would seriously consider a private prosecutio of the McCanns for Maddie'sand all other children with bad parents' sakes.

This case when I first heard about it saddened me so much. That little girl was just adorable. I would never ever think to leave children alone like that, it is just unbelievable.

They raise thousands upon thousands of pounds by fundraising and public donations. Why aren't they hiring the best of the best to find her? Why aren't the McCanns being subjected to top criminal psychologist to assess that what they say is true? They haven't even volunteered to do this or to even go on a lie detecter (that I know of).
I truly believe they know exactly what happened.

It is schocking to realise the parents got away with their lies. They are doctors and they are blond, and sadly, this is why they managed to convince Britain of their absurd story. If they were black and poor they would have been jailed ages ago, without any help from the high profile lawyers the mccanns were able to afford..all of that thanks to donations from the whole country?! Ours is a sad country.

Loved it. I will get the english version of the book. I, like many, were rivited by this case. It's hard to not believe that the parents may have been involved. As a parent, I simply wouldn't have left my children unattended for any reason regardless of where we were.

I totally understand why the McCann family objected to this book being published. It tells the public what they want to hear, THE TRUTH about the evidence! They are guilty of something for sure and I am so glad that you have summarised the book for us.
Anyone who leaves their children and is a UK citizen should be subject of a police and social services investigation and assessment. In this case, as the child has come to serious harm whilst in the care of her parents, the other children should have come under the care of the Local Authority, under the protection of a Care Order, and removed from their care until a thorough investigation is undertaken through the family courts. Whilst the parents would be encouraged to have legal representation, the children would also have legal rep, and their welfare is paramount. I will never understand why the neglect of these children did not follow normal proceedure.

Although Goncalo Amaral looks at the fact that the window wasn't forced (as claimed by the parents)and he looks at the front door (which we know was locked), he doesn't refer to the patio doors - that were left unlocked - and through which an abductor could have entered the apartment and left carrying the sleeping child.
Hi Katherine, that only makes things worst for the McCanns... how can it be possible that parents could leave their children home alone and on top of it with an open door!? Are you kidding me?
Gonçalo Amaral just pointed out some facts... he (or anybody else) don`t have to prove there`s not an abductor in this case. I believe there are enough evidences that show what happened... there is only one thing missing - and that is Maddie!
If there is enough evidence, who no prosecution?
Who Knows why!? I don`t know... perhaps the fact that this parents are well known physicians or even the fact that they spend millions trying to change public opinion... but this doesn`t mean they`ll not be under criminal prosecution in future.

I`ve to admit I no longer follow this case closely... not that I don`t care but there`re things about it that were always manipulated at such an extend I don`t believe in any of the news I saw. If the people who are responsible for Maddie`s "disappearance" were to be accused, that would have taken place a long time ago... "higher" forces are still being used against Maddie and truth.

The British public only see one half of the story unless they use the internet.Sadly the British media have spouted so much rubbish about the case in my opinion.The McCann's PR Clarence Mitchell was head of the Governments media control before working for them.Says a lot to me.The parents lied from the start by claiming the shutters were jemmied.Jane Tanner's 'abductor' description changed more than once.Me,I trust the indications of Eddie and Keela.Bless Madeleine.

The point is there isn't enough evidence - what there is is extremely flimsy and this hasn't changed my mind in any way about the fact that Maddie was clearly abducted. Dosing children with calpol to make them sleep? it's laughable - calpol is infant paracetamol - it certainly doesn't help children to sleep, as anyone who is a parent will know.
If like you said there`s not enough evidence how can you be so sure there was an abduction!?
I`m a parent... I never gave those craps to my daughter... does it makes me a worst dad!? Believe in what you want! :)
It's a shame the (then) poor interpreting of all the TV coverage was next to useless, which in turn gave the British public a questionable version of events. From the moment this sad incident happened, the "abduction" theory never rang true to me. It didn't help that Mrs McCann's answer to the suggestion that she and her husband killed their daughter (accidentally) was... "prove it"... I'm sorry, but if I was innocent, I'd be shouting it from the rooftops and doing my utmost to prove my innocence rather than galivanting all over the world...
I don't know what happend that night when maddaline dissapeard but the evidence seriously needs to be reconsiderd and gone over again co's somethings not right i would never leave my children alone no matter the circumstances lets face it some of the evidence and things done and said just don't make sense or add up LET'S LOOK AT IT ALL PEOPLE first of all they should not of left the children alone and when one of the mccans so called friends went to check on the children he said he looked through the window and could only clearly see the twin's but he thought that Maddie was just snuggeld under the covers but im sorry people if i couldnt see my babys clearly and even if it ment turning the light on and wakeing them or pulling the covers back and wakeing them id be doing it but no one did then they said there was no one to back up the story that the childrens window was open when kate found it she then ran of leaveing the twins on there own and in the same room from where Maddie had just been taken if that was me i would of picked my other two children up ana wouldnt of ever wanted to let them out my site but they say people act to different things in different ways they said it took a while for the police to get there what was all that about the police found someone else's blood on the wall and the sniffer dogs picked up the scent of a dead body on the floor in the wardrobe inthe luggage bit of there car and on maddie's cuddle cat and on some of kate's clothes but they said it wasn't enough for evidence they had a sighting of some male walking away from the hotel carrying or dragging a child and there's been so much other evidence and its just like no one is opening there eyes and seeing it it;s like there's a big cover up or something WILL SOMEONE THE MCANNS ANYONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT I CAN DO TO REALLY HELP
What role did Davide Pain play in all this,wasent he the last person to see madaleine, apart from the parents. Secondley,Its been said that the maccans are members of the Freemasons ,one of there rules is never to incriminate another member was David Pain also a Freemason I unerstand Gorden Brown belongs to the same organisation, what could this mean, Im suspispious.
