International Food Day

World Food Day (WFD)
As I was invited to make a presentation about World Food Day both for students and their parents I thought I could also make a hub about it.
If you ask me about world days in general I would say that I do not give them much attention most of the time.
But in this case I believe that it is not only an interesting subject but also a very actual issue that must be attended urgently.
October 16th - International Food Day
In this same day back in 1945 the United Nations founded the FAO - Food and Agriculture Organization.
But the World Food Day (WFD) was only established in 1979 and started to have different themes since 1981.

==============================
What has been done against hunger?
Today there are more than 150 countries participating in this event and there are thousands of organizations that help to spread the word all over the world.
Since 1997 TeleFood campaigns were brought to light and they have also helped the cause by raising over US$ 20 million in donations until now.
These project campaigns help funding small projects which are directed for small-scale poor farmers in order to allow them to produce more food, raise their revenues and make their access to food much easier.
Even though being very small scale projects they have been very useful for lots of small farmers around the world.
Kiva.org - Loans that chage lives!
I have been making small loans through Kiva and I am sure this has been the best way for me to help poor entrepreneurs living in less fortunate parts of the world.
I choose this system because I believe that loans can encourage more accountability than donations where repayment is not expected. This make those projects possible and motivate the borrowers to achieve their goals at the same time.

How come there is still people who does not have enough food?
It is somehow strange that although there is enough food produced in the world to feed everybody there are still so many people starving to dead.
It is estimate that at least 923 million people (mainly living in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa) do not have access to enough food and this means that their productivity it is diminished and their children have under growing problems.
This is even worst if we think about the health problems that come along within those communities.
World Foodless Day
World Food Security - 2009 WFD theme
The Challenges of Climate Change and Bio-energy are subjects that have great influence in the food problematic as they cause even more difficulties to small farmers than everyone could imagine and that makes the need for solutions much more pressing.
With the energy crisis there was the need to start using more bio-energy sources but this also made food prices to grow immensely which put poor countries in an even worst situation.

yep ... I will really check into it here...and it is so right..all of the countries in this world have something to offer to everyone in need...and it is not just the USA...if we are to be a world of humans doing what God wants we need to work together and at least see that the children eat...and anyone who is hungry...I am just apalled at what food is wasted and thrown away...big stores can't give food away that is not bought cause it might be no good...
which I guess is right..but I see things that the plastic wrappers to say milk are broken and they throw them away. the milk carton isn't damaged but just the wrapper is broken...I have seen them throw away tons of aspargus..onions, apples that were good but sat for a while...and everyone is so afraid of being sued...
I feel we are here to help anyone we can anyway we can...and like I have said each of us and each country has something special to offer...and we should think about sharing and caring for each person who is in need...and that is being done through many, many ways I know..Thank You my Love funride for such a wonderful Hub...I so admire you sweetie and hope all is well for you...G-Ma :o) hugs
Great hub - we will try and do something on the 16th. I shudder to think how the current world financial crisis will affect the poor and needy of this world and, as you've reminded us, there are still plenty of such people.
Bob - thanks for your interest and for all your activity and support to this cause.
G-Ma - your thoughts are so true and full of brotherly love. I too believe that apportioning it is one of the strategies which should be better performed and optimized. I love you and your BIG heart :-)
Peter - as I told in the begining I´m going to present this theme to young people and their parents and while I was researching I thought I should do more and so I decided to "talk" to much more people and help to spread the word here at HP.
Thanks for publishing this material on World Food Day. We all need to think about it more intensely.
Thank you, Patty. Things will only change if we all make it happen!
Great info and photos. You are doing a great job getting this info out as it is much needed to be heard. We are living in hard times and it is nice to have people like you out there who care.
Be well, Laurie
Thanks Laurie, coming from you (Inspire Wisdom) that comment means a lot to me. I hope this hub can inspire others to care about those problems.
Wonderful hub and an interesting read. I hate to say, but the only reason some peopel are starving and others eat well is because of greed. We could figure out a way to help all humans have enough food to eat if we really wanted to. Many people volunteer, but the world needs to work together on this issue more. Hopefully someday.
You´re right SweetiePie, it´s something which would be easy if everybody stop for a moment and realize how small it would be the effort that each of us had to make to solve the problem. Let´s hope that day is near.
That is a really nice page about an important topic, great layout and content.
Thanks Tony, your comments are much appreciated ;-)
Excellent hub! We should always try to make this world better!
Thank you for enlightening me that World Food Day is about more than just making a dish for the class. I just dvr'ed a doc about the food crisis, gotta go and watch it now! Great job!
Thanks Michelle, you`re right but unfortunately everything we have done so far still seems not enough :(
Hi Petunia, welcome to hubpages! I`m glad this hub was useful to your enlightenment ;)
Have fun!
we don't liked your article , you all should be updated.....................??????????
it is really a great job on world food day. well presented article.
Hi Abhinav, I´m sorry you didn´t like this hub. What do you think should be updated?
Hi Sukkran, how are you doing? Thanks for passing by and commenting.
Great hub Ricardo. I see some disasters looming - especially where GE crops and patenting is concerned. Good to see some action in this area. I agree about kiva and use them also.
Thanks Mark, it`s nice of you to visit this hub precisely on World Food Day :)
Everything each of us can do to help make things better it `s never enough. Yes, the micro-credits works quite nicely.
